Setting Up Server Space
All UIA dial-up customers are entitled to 5 MB of personal web space free with their $20-per-month account. Your personal webspace is activated automatically when your account is created, and you do not need to do anything to get the space set up. All personal webspaces are located on cochise.uia.net, under the owner's username.

Designing Your Website
The graphic and HTML design of your personal website is up to you. Web design software has improved dramatically over the past couple of years and now makes designing attractive sites relatively easy, without the need for knowledge of HTML programming. We recommend Macromedia Dreamweaver or Adobe PageMill. If you prefer to learn HTML and design the site "by hand," we recommend HTML for the World Wide Web: A Visual Quickstart Guide 2nd ed. by Elizabeth Castro (Peachpit Press, $17.95). This is an excellent reference book for both beginners and more advanced users of HTML.

Posting Your Site to the Server
Once you have your site ready to be posted to the server, you will need to use FTP to transfer the files from your computer to the server. Some web design software can do the FTP for you. Alternately, you may wish to use a separate FTP program to transfer the files. There are shareware FTP programs you can download directly from us. For Windows users we recommend WS-FTP, and for Macintosh users the choice is Fetch.

Note that you must use the default filename for the server your account is on. That is, the filename for the page on your site that you want to load first, without having to specify the name of the file in the URL, must match the default name for that particular server. In this case, the default name is "index.html". Note that due to the file naming schemes of Windows 95/98, the files may not have the same names after you copy them to the server as they do on your own hard drive. The safest way to avoid these problems is to give all files names with 8 characters or less, plus a 3 character extension. (You can use ".htm" instead of ".html" on all files except the default page.) Your FTP program will allow you to rename the files after copying them to the server, if necessary.

Once your files are copied, you can view them online with your web browser software immediately! You will be able to view the page at http://cochise.uia.net/yourusername; i.e., if your username is 'fripwurble' your site will be at http://cochise.uia.net/fripwurble. If you make changes to the site, simply use your FTP program to transfer the new versions of the files up to the server. The changes will appear on the site immediately. Note that you may have to clear the cache on your web browser before you will be able to see the changes.
