These are reproduc-tions from Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible which show that crosses used for Roman executions were indeed "T" shaped.
The cross-piece even had a special name- the Patibulum.
The Way's aversion to the cross is certainly not based on historical fact. It may be due to Wierwille's desire to be different from traditional Christianity- no matter how deeply into error it took him. Or it may be because he was one of the many who "live as enemies of the cross of Christ" (Philippians 3:18) who Paul warns us to avoid.
